This edible fruit is widely gathered for subsistence, and often used in juices and jellies.  Overripe berries can take on a musty odor.  Foliage turns bright red in autumn.

  • Alaska.  Wide view of both the north and south beaches at the mouth of the Kenai River in July with hundreds of dipnetting fishermen working near shore as a fishing boat moves out the channel into Cook Inlet.  Behind them is an array of tents forming an encampment.  The short dipnetting personal use fishery is immensely popular as thousands of visitors swell the local population of the town of Kenai and surrounding area.
