  • Alaska. Sport fishermen are lined up along the south bank of the Upper Kenai River just below the Russian River Ferry landing as they fish for Sockey Salmon (Reds) in June. One of the most popular fisheries in the state due to its world-famous salmon runs, the Upper Kenai and Russian Rivers draw crowds from all over the world resulting in the inevitable elbow-to-elbow "combat fishing" conditions. The ferry is at the dock on the right hand side and a large yellow raft full of tourists floats down the middle of the river.

  • Alaska. Array of signs at the Russian River ferry parking area at Sportsman's Landing on the Upper Kenai River in June depicting Russian River Rules. The two largest signs address how to stay safe in bear country, including the close management of food, beverages, and anything with a strong odor.

  • Alaska. Two fishermen react casually while two juvenile Brown Bears (Ursus arctos) approach the south bank of the Upper Kenai River near the Russian River Ferry in June. The mother bear is just out of the picture in the woods behind. Bears routinely forage the banks of this highly popular fishery for easy pickings of salmon on stringers or for human food let unattended. Bear/human interaction is problematic and often leads to habituation, with negative results for the bear.
