Alaska. Close-up of an open unusual four-part cottonwood tree seed capsule most likely from a hybrid between Balsam Poplar (Populus balsamifera) and Black Cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa). These species often hybridize in Southcentral Alaska. Typically Balsam Poplar seed capsules have two parts while Black Cottonwood capsules have three. Collected in Portage Valley in August.
